WWR: Ame-Comi Wonder Woman #1 Review

DC, in an effort to bring together anime and comics fans, introduced a line of toys featuring the girls of the DCU rendered in an anime style. The toys have been so popular that this Monday DC released a digital first line of comics by the same name: Ame-Comi.

The series will begin an over-arcing story,  following Wonder Woman on a 3 episode plot; doing the same across books for Batgirl, Duela Dent, Power Girl, and Super Girl before bringing the series to a close. In an innovative experiment, these books are released online for only 99 cents and on Monday rather than Wednesday with it’s print counterpart. I believe these books are only being released online until their popularity can be gauged to see whether there is enough interest to warrant a single or tpb printing.

So how does this first issue stack up?

Arrow-dynamics, Streamlining Green Arrows Jump to TV

This week a new teaser trailer for The CW’s Arrow has been released, giving us more insight into the backstory, art direction, and (hopefully) overall style of the upcoming show. We are treated to some island shots of his origin, the first shot of one of his trick arrows, a quick action sequence of close quarters combat (which shows just how a guy with a bow and arrow can evade and take down those with guns), some humor, and the obligatory hero shots; that’s a lot to take in in just 30 seconds!

The survivalist aspect during Ollie’s island exile has been GA’s origin story since Jack Kirby; but it was really brought out and set the tone for our modern age understanding of the emerald archer In Andy Diggle & Jock’s Green Arrow Year 1. Just watching the few island shots we were privy to in this teaser it’s clear that from the beginning that the CW is trying to appeal to existing fans by at least acknowledging his comic roots story wise and stylistically.

Wednesday Warrior Review- The Guild: Fawkes (One Shot)

PNN’s inaugural Wednesday Warrior Review is dedicated to Felicia Day and all the fine folks over at The Guild. The Guild is being published by Dark Horse and with this issue has wrapped up a series of one shots each dedicated to one of the main characters as a prequel book informing their backstory prior to the first season of the web series of the same name (for more info on the series, check out Congrats Guildies).

Todays issue follows Fawkes, the leader of rival guild the Axis of Anarchy, on a bridging adventure between season 4 following his journey to his surprising state when he returns in season 5.  This issue reveals how Fawkes deals with his split from Codex (Felicia Day) and navigates the aggressive personalities of the Axis both in game and out. As usual for The Guild books, there’s a variant cover (which I always wind up buying as the var usually features in game personas and comes off way more epic, although both covers for this one were in game likenesses), and a 4 page sample can be found on Dark Horse’s website (or by clicking the covers below).

Holy DLC Batman!

Just announced within the last week, the new Harley Quinn’s Revenge mission pack for Arkham City!

Harley Quinn’s Revenge will be available to purchase from May 29th on both Xbox LIVE (800 Microsoft Points) and PlayStation Network ($9.99) and also included in the Game of the Year Edition of Batman: Arkham City, which will also be available on May 29th.

The Harley Quinn’s Revenge mission sends players back into Arkham City to face their final challenge as they interchange between playing as both Batman and Robin. Gamers must utilize each of the characters’ unique combat and investigative skills to uncover Harley’s vengeful plan and shut the gates on the urban mega-prison forever. In addition to experiencing a new storyline, fans can explore new environments and face-off against Harley’s all new gang of thugs.

This is the final chapter in Batman: Arkham City that adds more than two hours of original gameplay to the critically-acclaimed interactive title!

To the Tumblr Batman!

I come across a fair amount of geeky and punny material everyday in my keeping up with keeping up.  I’ve wanted to post some of it here but didn’t want to clog up actual writting with a bunch of random images.

The solution? Tumblr (it had to be good for something right)!

Check it out PNN Tumblr Should get a few geeky laughs a day from it!

i’ll try to get a sticky so that this blog displays the latest image from the tumblr, but in the meantime please forgive the site appearance as I get the theme and options and whatnot worked out; enjoy and feel free to post anything that you come across yourselves!

When Nerd Love Turns Real: Turning the pithy into passion

Now we as nerds have been known to, on occasion, geek out about things.  If you combine our obsessions with our excitability one can quickly find themselves with a new hobby. Who among us hasn’t wanted to wield a broadsword after seeing Lord of the Rings or brandish a bullwhip with Indiana Jones level of precision or, hell, join the Marines after exiting 300?

I personally caught myself driving home on my bike at 120 mph after seeing The Dark Knight, started fencing as a lifelong reaction to The Princess Bride and have lofty ambitions of designing a full set of armor inspired by Game of Thrones!

However the geek activity du jure is the summer of archery! Between The Hunger Games, The Avengers, Brave, & Arrow you can’t turn on a movie without a badass flourishing some fletching. The Los Angeles Times featured an article earlier this year saying that sales of archery equipment is up over 20% for the year; with attendance at  the National Field Archery Assn.’s World Cup tournament up 40% from the year before. Whether we want to admit it or not, Hollywood plays a big part in showcasing and highlighting trends that then became mainstream. Pre-Hunger games, Pre-Lord of the Rings archery was the domain of hunters and renaissance re-enactors. Today, the Games paints it as sleek and a tool of rebellion, LOTR as smart and lithe, Brave as a symbol of independance, Hawkeye as precise and powerful, and Arrow as vengence personified in patience. With so many shades and some of the biggest franchises in history backing it,  it’s no surprise that archery is putting up some very big numbers as “hunger games fever” (as it has been so affectionately dubbed at my local range) is poised to enter it’s third month with no signs of slowing down. Classes are filling up hours in advance and even for long time members parking and range time is at a premium.
