Philly Comic Con
This weekend marked the passing of yet another year for the Philadelphia Comic Con. Once a con plagued by terrible under-attendance and being kinda under-whelming in general, I must say has shown up this year in quite a grand fashion! Unlike San Diego, where everyone makes their big announcements and the entire con has shifted focus from comics to general pop culture, Philadelphia Wizard World contains not a single gaming console, major network, or Sony branded anything on the floor. You won’t find 300 person long lines for swag giveaways at the G4 booth, and i find that quite refreshing. Just comics, toys/t-shirts sporting comics, the creators of said comics, and the fans that love comics; what can i say it’s a freaking comic convention. This con is perfectly suited to it’s size. Is the floor crowded? Yes. Claustrophobicly so? No. Are there lines to get into the panels? Yes. Is anybody left out because the room was full? No. This was really a joy to be at. Also because there’s no big spoiler alerts, new announcements, or exclusive toy lines to write about; figured I’d just give you some pictorial love of the panels I attended along with some of my favorite quotes from each!
Stan Lee, moderated by Clare Kramer
“The ones who choose good are heros, and the ones that choose evil read DC”
Question: If you could have any superpower for your character on Heros, what would it be?
Hayden: I always wanted something to shoot out of my hands. Although, that’s all digital effects; the directors would have to keep reminding those characters that when they pose their moves not to make the sound effects!
“My favorite part of the Avengers script was reading ‘and then Hulk smashes Thor in his big Norse face'”
Nick Gillard– Star Wars Stunt Director (Episodes 1-3)
Nick was hosting a Jedi lightsaber fighting workshop which looked like it would have been fun as hell to take; however the program failed to mention that it was $150, so I just took pics of it instead.
Bruce: I’ve been watching dailies for the new Evil Dead movie, it looks good; you won’t see any green garden hoses spurting blood in this one
Crowd: Collective ‘Awwwwww’
Bruce: Ok…it’ll be a really nice hose.
Star Trek The Captains Panel w/ William Shatner, Patrick Stewart, Avery Brooks, Kate Mulgrew, Scott Bakula
Kate Mulgrew: (at the end of a speach about friendship) It’s the most important thing in the world, everything else is fleeting. To have 7 great friends, and one lover.
Kate Mulgrew: What, you’d rather have it the other way around?
Shatner: (waving a finger skyward) There was a time!
Following The Captains panel, easily the biggest panel of the day, it was time to head down to the costume contest. The percent of “good” cosplay costumes to cheap store bought/non-costumed attendees was lower than something like a SDCC; but the quality of the good costumes and the heart and effort on the whole totally floored me. Here’s some of my favorites; check out the Flickr link at the top for some more; or check back later this week for a dedicated post on it (yeah, they were that good).
My day was capped off with a viewing of an indie film out of Canada called Lloyd the Conqueror. The film takes place in the eccentric and comedic world of Live Action Role Playing; expect a full review later on in the week, just know that it looks great, is hilariously written, and there’s some great performances and cameos. For now, enjoy this teaser.
Long story short this con was great, focused, and full of fan love.
Hopefully next year I’ll see you there!
