E3 Press Reveals

Today marks the official start to 2012’s Electronic Entertainment Expo with all the big publishers press conferences before the expo is opened up to the public tomorrow. E3 is the place for the video game industry to make all it’s big announcements, unveil their largest properties, and give gamers a chance to get some hands on experience playing some of the most anticipated titles of the year.
Before we get into the nitty gritty of individual games, here are some of my general impressions thus far.
-Better looking: this goes without saying, but every year developers push the bounds of their respective hardware with bigger worlds, smoother gameplay, and better graphics with more attention to detail. While just a few years ago characters were just simple skins wrapped around a 3d model are now more interactive than ever. The new Madden takes into consideration where on your player gets hit or clipped with a new run time physics engine; or grab the knife out of your targets belt before making him you victim in Far Cry 3. Of course the resolution and level of detail is off the charts, games find new and more innovative ways to act with your environment, and the graphics are more Hd-ier than ever as Nintendo is finally poised to enter the next gen market with the Wii U later thus year. Which brings me to my next point:
-Hardware: I have yet to see any games utilizing new hardware or peripherals. Hopefully Nintendo has finally realized that we don’t want another piece of white plastic clogging up our game rooms. The sole exception to this is the addition of the Wii U’s tablet controller. Ubisoft is include support for the device in many of it’s new releases; none featured more prominently than in Rayman where a new character is utilized entirely through swipe movements. As for me I think it’s nothing more than playing ipad level games on your tv especially since you can only have one player linked into the game via a tablet at any given time; but who knows maybe it’ll be cool to be able to use it as a portable screen/controller to play Mario Kart from the can.

-Free to Play: The largest kick in subscribable video games has been to switch to a free to play model and either micro charging for costume customization, upgrades, decorative items, etc.; or to offer free game play up to a certain level.  I think the latter of the two is a great way to get in some of the more casual gamer market; especially in an MMO setting where they wouldn’t normally pony up the monthly subscription fee without knowing what they were getting (remember kiddies, first taste is always free). Earlier this year DCU Online switched to this model in the face of terrible sales figures and the servers have been doing well since; even World of Warcraft switched to this model with a cap of level 20. This year seems to be continuing this trend as Star Wars: The Old Republic will be switching to a FTP model starting in July (up to level 15).

Now on to my favorite games! As far as FPS’s go Crysis 3 is visually amze-balls; but for stand alone game play; Far Cry 3 takes the cake IMO. Also announced was an innovative multiplayer team shooter, ShootMania: Storm.  It features Tron-esque costumes and phsyics; but for a game with that stupid of a name, it looks like a lot of fun to play.

On a side note; I was really shocked to see the Far Cry trailer on TV; clearly showing the female form I guess is ok if it’s animated and covered with tattoos!

However I think hands down I was most blown away by Assassins Creed 3. This installment departs from Ezio’s storyline and will be Epic, nay Revolutionary as we move up to the American War for Independence (only partiall sorry for the pun)! Your new protagonist, Connor, is part English part American Indian and all assassin! Hi mentors will include the likes of Ben Franklin and George Washington and takes place over the span of 30 years, as you embark on missions taking out targets on both sides of the conflict and set into motion the American Revolution.  I’m gonna shut up now and let you enjoy this preview and gameplay videos!

Farcry and Assassin’s Creed look good, but other than that I’ve been pretty disappointed by what I’ve seen. I expected a lot more interesting news than what I’ve gotten. Wii U seems meh overall. I expected more from it, to be honest. I am really curious to see how developers handle making games for a platform with 4 controllers and umpteen other peripherals.

    • Yeah what everyone really wanted was a wii; with 1:1 motion controlls; and HD output; at launch. We got a wii, then 3 years later 1:1 motion and 2 years after that HD output. Everyone always calls them a game changer but really they’re where expectations were at 5 years ago. How all the grandparents in American wound up buying one still baffles me.
