Yesterday a full trailer for the CW’s upcoming series Arrow was released! As any regular readers here know, Green Arrow is hands down my favorite comic-book character; and I can’t possibly be more excited for this series! Each clip released has wet my interest more and more starting with the Sample Scene and even more so with the Arrow Teaser. Clocking in at a whopping three and a half minutes, this latest clip gives us the best view and most insight on what to expect from the series yet!
Yesterday indie rockstar Kevin Smith launched his new movie review series, Spoilers. Par for the course, Smith never does anything according to convention. This is not a regular show, you wont find it on your tv. Rather, as traditional tv is further diluted by hundreds of channels and more younger viewers switching to online viewing, this show is being broadcast exclusively on Hulu, for free! Nor is Spoilers a tradition movie review show. Instead of having two stuffy old guys clinically dissecting film; each week, the show will take a group of everyday Joes to the theatre to see a new release. For the inaugural episode, ‘Girls Just Wanna Have Guns’ Kev & the Spoilers review Snow White and the Huntsman; with the general consensus being that it’s a gorgeously shot entertaining summer movie but is lacking in character development and that Kristen Stewart’s acting is underwhelming and at times even distracting. One of the Spoilers hit the nail on the head saying, “She was like a prop, everyone else just acted around her.” So I guess we get more reprise of her razor sharp deer in the headlights method of acting made famous in Twilight. “She always looks like she’s about to say something important, and then they cut away; I’m like wait wait wait!”
What I really like about this show is the unbiased reviewers mixed in with Kevin’s commentary. You get opinions ranging from rating the film for its mere entertainment popcorn value up to it’s overall film worthiness, all laced with Kev’s patented brand of comedy.
After a full day of Star Trekking, Stan Leeing, and Bruce Campbelling I skipped the Geek Nation after party as I was just too wiped out. I drove back in a homewardish direction and stopped off at a local pizza/sports bar for a slice and a drink. The assortment of baseball, basketball, and for whatever reason softball games on the screens held no interest for me; however the Stan-Lee (see what I did there?) Cup finals were on one solitary screen. However, to see that screen I had to stare thru a table of a gaggle of college girls; the type that would normally frequent a sports bar on a saturday night. After several minutes of intense staring at the screen one girl whispered to another who quickly turned around looked at me and rolled her eyes.
Now I’m certainly no Chris Hemsworth (if you want to see him check out my full day coverage of Philly Con) but I’m not the worst thing to look at either.
Two things ladies:
A- I’m watching the hockey game not staring at your boobs; you’re gossipy high pitched woo’s are no match for brutal non-stop action and
B- I’ve literally just spent all day around girls dressed in leather and spandex, if really anything at all; representing some of the most well developed characters in popular literature; frankly you are boring by comparison.
That is all; stay nerdy my friends.
This weekend marked the passing of yet another year for the Philadelphia Comic Con. Once a con plagued by terrible under-attendance and being kinda under-whelming in general, I must say has shown up this year in quite a grand fashion! Unlike San Diego, where everyone makes their big announcements and the entire con has shifted focus from comics to general pop culture, Philadelphia Wizard World contains not a single gaming console, major network, or Sony branded anything on the floor. You won’t find 300 person long lines for swag giveaways at the G4 booth, and i find that quite refreshing. Just comics, toys/t-shirts sporting comics, the creators of said comics, and the fans that love comics; what can i say it’s a freaking comic convention. This con is perfectly suited to it’s size. Is the floor crowded? Yes. Claustrophobicly so? No. Are there lines to get into the panels? Yes. Is anybody left out because the room was full? No. This was really a joy to be at. Also because there’s no big spoiler alerts, new announcements, or exclusive toy lines to write about; figured I’d just give you some pictorial love of the panels I attended along with some of my favorite quotes from each!
Happy Geek Pride/Star Wars/Towel/Disc Day! That’s a lot of geeky love to show, so I’m going to keep this short and sweet; go out, do something geeky, and be proud of it! Being a nerd is all about being unashamedly passionate about what you LOVE! Enjoy the below gallery of me at some of my geekiest moments; hopefully it inspires you to do likewise! Stay nerdy my friends.
Just announced within the last week, the new Harley Quinn’s Revenge mission pack for Arkham City!
Harley Quinn’s Revenge will be available to purchase from May 29th on both Xbox LIVE (800 Microsoft Points) and PlayStation Network ($9.99) and also included in the Game of the Year Edition of Batman: Arkham City, which will also be available on May 29th.
The Harley Quinn’s Revenge mission sends players back into Arkham City to face their final challenge as they interchange between playing as both Batman and Robin. Gamers must utilize each of the characters’ unique combat and investigative skills to uncover Harley’s vengeful plan and shut the gates on the urban mega-prison forever. In addition to experiencing a new storyline, fans can explore new environments and face-off against Harley’s all new gang of thugs.
This is the final chapter in Batman: Arkham City that adds more than two hours of original gameplay to the critically-acclaimed interactive title!
I come across a fair amount of geeky and punny material everyday in my keeping up with keeping up. I’ve wanted to post some of it here but didn’t want to clog up actual writting with a bunch of random images.
The solution? Tumblr (it had to be good for something right)!
Check it out PNN Tumblr Should get a few geeky laughs a day from it!
i’ll try to get a sticky so that this blog displays the latest image from the tumblr, but in the meantime please forgive the site appearance as I get the theme and options and whatnot worked out; enjoy and feel free to post anything that you come across yourselves!
Now we as nerds have been known to, on occasion, geek out about things. If you combine our obsessions with our excitability one can quickly find themselves with a new hobby. Who among us hasn’t wanted to wield a broadsword after seeing Lord of the Rings or brandish a bullwhip with Indiana Jones level of precision or, hell, join the Marines after exiting 300?
I personally caught myself driving home on my bike at 120 mph after seeing The Dark Knight, started fencing as a lifelong reaction to The Princess Bride and have lofty ambitions of designing a full set of armor inspired by Game of Thrones!
However the geek activity du jure is the summer of archery! Between The Hunger Games, The Avengers, Brave, & Arrow you can’t turn on a movie without a badass flourishing some fletching. The Los Angeles Times featured an article earlier this year saying that sales of archery equipment is up over 20% for the year; with attendance at the National Field Archery Assn.’s World Cup tournament up 40% from the year before. Whether we want to admit it or not, Hollywood plays a big part in showcasing and highlighting trends that then became mainstream. Pre-Hunger games, Pre-Lord of the Rings archery was the domain of hunters and renaissance re-enactors. Today, the Games paints it as sleek and a tool of rebellion, LOTR as smart and lithe, Brave as a symbol of independance, Hawkeye as precise and powerful, and Arrow as vengence personified in patience. With so many shades and some of the biggest franchises in history backing it, it’s no surprise that archery is putting up some very big numbers as “hunger games fever” (as it has been so affectionately dubbed at my local range) is poised to enter it’s third month with no signs of slowing down. Classes are filling up hours in advance and even for long time members parking and range time is at a premium.
The CW released this week a teaser montage for their new show Arrow to debut Wednesdays this fall. Up until today all we had to go on was this figure cloaked in shadow and the two things that jumped out at me were:
1) He has a recurve bow, thank god he’s not that little twit from the DC reboot
2) He kinda looks like the GA we saw in Smallville.
Before I ramble on any further lets take a look at the clip; roll it Johnny!
My feelings are a bit mixed; for one, just how much of each episode is going to be devoted to showing ole Ollie’s abs (his Arrow-bics, sorry couldn’t help myself)? Also, for whatever reason they have decided to change the name of Star City; not to Seattle or someplace real as they did in the comic reboot, but rather to starling city. Went from being the jewel of the heavens to an annoying songbird. The official notes from CW hint at maintaining GA: Year 1 continuity, which would be a great way to retain the old school fanbase AND get in some really human moments (maybe thru flashbacks or whatever).
Just wanted to take today to say congratulations to the cast of the guild. Their music videos combined on youtube hit 24 million views today!
For those unfamiliar, The Guild is a web series started by Felicia Day (Dr. Horrible) that follows the misadventures of her and her fellow gamers as they team up to conquer “the game” (not WoW they’re VERY careful about not using any proper names) and survive real life. What started as a modest undertaking and passion project has since grown into it’s 5th season, being featured on msn and xbox live, and perhaps the most successful web series to date!
